A nationwide Bharat Bandh has been called for on February 12 by a joint platform of 10 central trade unions. Several farmers’ organizations have also extended their support to the strike. The strike is being called due to concerns over new labor laws, privatization, wage hikes, social security and the proposed India-US trade agreement.
Why the strike?
The protesting organizations claim that the four new labor laws that have been brought in place of 29 labor laws are curtailing the rights of workers and making hiring and firing easier. In addition, farmers’ organizations fear that the India-US trade agreement may harm domestic agriculture if it comes into effect.
What are the possible impacts?
Bank services:
Several banking unions including AIBEA, AIBOA, BEFI are participating in the strike. Although the Reserve Bank has not declared a holiday, branch-level services such as cash transactions or cheque clearance may be delayed. Online banking and ATM services will remain functional. A private bank employee in Kolkata said that their bank will remain open.
Transport:
In case of road blockade or protest, buses, taxis and local transport may be disrupted in some areas. The situation will depend on the level of participation. Attendance in government offices may also be low.
Markets and offices:
Some markets, shops and government offices in big cities may be partially affected. However, there is no announcement that everything will be completely closed.
Schools and colleges:
No order has been issued to close educational institutions across the country. However, holidays may be declared in some places depending on the local situation. Students and parents have been advised to keep in touch with the concerned institutions.
Which services will be operational?
Essential services like hospitals and emergency medical services, ambulances, airports, electricity and water supply are expected to remain normal. Private offices and ATM services are also likely to remain operational.
What is the impact in Bengal?
In West Bengal, several labor organizations are also participating in the bandh, but most are not. Some organizations claim that the decision to bandh is intentional. Still, as a result, there is a possibility of protests or road blockades in some districts of the state. However, the administration is ready to handle the situation. Public transport and government services may be partially affected, although efforts will be made to maintain normal public life. However, the Trinamool government has been against the bandh since coming to power. Therefore, it is believed that the bandh tomorrow will not have an impact on Bengal.
