New Delhi: Tensions between the United States and Iran show no signs of subsiding anytime soon. The persistent state of tension between the two nations has created an atmosphere of instability throughout the Middle East. Iran is actively responding to U.S. attacks and statements. Meanwhile, amidst this conflict, a particular island is also garnering significant headlines.
The reason for this is reportedly that it has come directly into Donald Trump’s crosshairs. Although Kharg Island—located in the Persian Gulf—is a relatively small landmass, it is considered the backbone of Iran’s oil-dependent economy. This is because it handles the responsibility for the vast majority of Iran’s crude oil exports.
It also serves as a $78 billion revenue-generating engine for Iran. Significantly, Trump’s plan for a major strike would deal a severe blow not only to Iran but, even more so, to China, as the “Dragon” (China) remains the largest buyer of Iranian oil.
Key Facts About the Island
For Iran, this island could prove to be a case of “a small package delivering a big punch.” The island covers an area of just 20 square kilometres, measuring approximately 3 miles in width and 7 miles in length. It is situated a mere 25 kilometres off the coast of Iran’s Bushehr province.
Most notably, despite its diminutive physical size, it stands as a symbol of Iran’s economic and military might, as well as a critical element of global energy security. Strategically, it holds immense importance because the deep waters surrounding it allow the world’s largest oil tankers to dock there with ease.
Kharg Island: Iran’s Largest Oil Terminal
For the record, Kharg Island is recognised as Iran’s largest oil terminal. The tank farm located on the island possesses a storage capacity of approximately 24 million barrels of crude oil. Furthermore, pipelines connect the island to Iran’s major oil fields—Gachsaran and Ahvaz. Oil flows from these fields to the island via these pipelines and is subsequently transported to various countries across the globe aboard large oil tankers. Will the Iranian Economy Collapse?
Meanwhile, not only Trump but also his ally—US Senator Lindsey Graham—stated in a post on the social media platform Twitter (now X) that an attack on Kharg Island would help shorten the duration of the war. He wrote that this would occur if Iran were to lose control over its oil infrastructure at Kharg Island.
