This iPhone is reportedly going to have 5G satellite connectivity. For this, the Cupertino-based business is utilizing technology known as New Radio Non-Terrestrial Network, or NR-NTN. iPhones may be able to link directly to low-orbit satellites thanks to this technology.

This feature in Apple’s next iPhone 18 Pro will enable users to access 5G internet and telephony even without a regular mobile network, according to information shared on the Chinese social media site Weibo. Users’ devices in remote locations with little to no network coverage will be able to connect via satellite thanks to the NR-NTN technology in the C2 baseband. This year’s phone launch will prioritize satellite connectivity.

As previously reported, Apple is working on “Satellite over 5G” capabilities. With this technology, 5G connection does not require on-ground coverage. Mark Gurman of Bloomberg claimed that Apple is creating 5G coverage via satellite. Even though satellite connectivity was first offered by Apple with the iPhone 14, it was a somewhat limited feature.

Features including Roadside Assistance, Messages, Find My Device, and Emergency SOS were made available to users. Not every country has satellite connectivity for the iPhone 14. Compared to the previous C1 and C1X chips, Apple’s new C2 model is more advanced. Even on crowded networks, this modem can offer improved coverage. A “Limit Precise Location” function that provides precise user location may also be included.

Also, the Chinese business Huawei has stated that it is getting ready to test its NR-NTN solution in public. It might be tested this year, although it was meant to be made available for public testing last year. The iPhone 18 may come with the C2 modem in addition to the Pro variants of the iPhone 18 series. Users will not need a network to receive 5G services thanks to satellite connectivity.
