UPI Payment: In today’s times, making UPI payments through Google Pay, PhonePe, or Paytm has become a part of our daily lives. But imagine buying something at a store and suddenly your phone’s internet data runs out or the mobile network goes out! Not having cash in your pocket could be a big problem.
But now you don’t need to worry at all. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) offers a great service that allows you to transfer money to anyone without internet access. It requires neither Wi-Fi nor mobile data. This service works equally fast on expensive smartphones as well as simple Rs 1000 keypad (feature) phones. Another special feature of this service is that it supports English, Hindi, and several other languages.

Step 1: Dial *99# from your phone
First, open your phone’s dialer, type *99#, and then press the call button. Remember to dial from the same mobile number (SIM) linked to your bank account. This USSD-based service works with almost all major banks in India.
Step 2: Select the ‘Send Money’ option
Upon dialing the number, a pop-up menu (Flash Message) will appear on your phone screen, displaying various banking options such as Send Money, Request Money, Check Balance, and My Profile. Here, you’ll need to reply by entering the number for the ‘Send Money’ option (usually number 1) to send money.
Step 3: Select the method of sending the money
A new option will appear on the screen to select the method you want to send the money through. You can transfer money using the recipient’s UPI ID, mobile number, or bank account number and IFSC code. Enter the option number of your choice and press send.
Step 4: Enter the recipient’s details and amount
Now carefully type in the recipient’s mobile number or UPI ID, depending on the method you selected. Then, enter the amount you want to send. Be sure to double-check your details before proceeding.
Step 5: Enter your UPI PIN
In the final step, enter your private UPI PIN to complete the payment. Once you enter the PIN, your payment will be processed immediately and the funds will be transferred to the recipient’s account. Once the transaction is successful, you will receive a confirmation on your screen and via SMS.
It’s important to note that offline UPI payment services are as beneficial as they are detrimental. While using this service allows for easy payment, you don’t earn any reward points. Instead, your telecom operator, such as Jio, Airtel, or Vi, may charge a carrier fee (approximately Rs 0.50). Therefore, avoid using this service unless absolutely necessary.
