Ujjwala Yojana: The situation in West Asia remains tense due to the ongoing standoff between the US and Iran. This has severely disrupted trade passing through the Strait of Hormuz. Consequently, prices of petrol, diesel, and LPG cylinders are rising across many countries. In India, too, the prices of commercial and domestic gas cylinders have skyrocketed, straining household budgets.
Additionally, the government has reduced the number of subsidised cylinders provided annually under this scheme. Nevertheless, the scheme is proving to be a great help to poor families. People continue to apply to avail themselves of the financial assistance and indirect subsidies offered upon obtaining a first-time connection. Those interested in benefiting from the scheme can check the relevant details here.
Key details about the PM Ujjwala Yojana
The Central Government’s PM Ujjwala Yojana was launched to provide free LPG connections to women from families living below the poverty line. Under this scheme, the government provides financial assistance of ₹1,600 for a new connection, covering the costs of the cylinder security deposit, regulator, and gas pipe. Furthermore, beneficiaries receive an additional subsidy of ₹300 per cylinder directly transferred to their bank accounts by the government.
