Aadhaar Card Update

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has revised the documents required for new Aadhaar card registration or Aadhaar update starting in 2025-26. Updated documents will now be required for both purposes. Furthermore, the UIDAI has clarified some important Aadhaar-related rules. The most prominent of these changes is that an individual should have only one Aadhaar number. Let’s discuss the documents that have been changed in detail.

A Single Aadhaar Number Will Remain Valid

Aadhaar Card Update

According to the UIDAI, if for some reason a person has two Aadhaar numbers, only the one in which the biometric details were first entered will remain active and valid. This means that if someone has two Aadhaar numbers due to a technical glitch or multiple applications, the first one will remain valid. If you wish to make any changes to your Aadhaar, you can now do so using updated documents.

List of New Documents Required for Aadhaar

The list of documents required for Aadhaar enrolment or changes has been revised as per the First Amendment Regulations, 2025. Now, different documents will be valid for proving identity, address, date of birth, and relationship.

Documents Required for Identity Proof

You can now use a PAN card, voter ID, driving license, or any government photo ID card to prove your identity.

Documents Required for Address Proof

Electricity, water, or gas bills, bank passbooks, ration cards, or documents related to government housing schemes will be valid for proof of address.

Documents Required for Date of Birth

A birth certificate, passport, or SSLC (School Leaving Certificate) certificate can be used as proof of date of birth.

Documents Required to Prove Family Relationship

To establish a family relationship, a Public Distribution System (PDS) card, MGNREGA job card, or birth certificate with the parents’ names must be submitted.

Aadhaar for Children Under 5

Aadhaar registration for children under 5 years of age can be done in two ways. First, by using the documents of the head of the family. Second, registration can be done independently by submitting supporting documents. Aadhaar cards issued for young children are also called Blue Aadhaar, which does not capture any biometric data. This visionary change by UIDAI will make the Aadhaar process simpler, transparent, and secure.
