Smart Meter: The residents of Uttar Pradesh are actively protesting against the installation of smart meters. In both villages and cities, these smart meters are being uprooted and discarded. Locals claim they are being compelled to pay inflated fees due to erroneous readings.
In light of the complaints from electricity users, the Uttar Pradesh government has made a significant decision regarding smart/prepaid meters. Henceforth, all smart meters in the state will function as postpaid meters, which is anticipated to offer immediate relief to consumers. This move by the Energy Department has temporarily abolished the prepaid system. Consumers will now receive their bills at the end of each month, as they did previously, and are required to pay within the designated timeframe.
What changes can we expect?
As per the government’s decision, all smart meters will now operate like standard (postpaid) meters. The prepaid system has been terminated. Bills for usage from the 1st to the 30th of each month will be dispatched via SMS/WhatsApp within the next 10 days. Consumers must ensure timely payment of their bills. The electricity department has urged that mobile numbers be updated for meter notifications.
Relief from Power Outages and Arrears
The government has provided explicit instructions that electricity connections will not be severed under any circumstances during the month. Additionally, consumers with pending dues will have the option to pay in 10 installments. The replacement of old meters with smart/prepaid meters has been suspended. However, addressing complaints related to recently installed smart meters will be prioritized.
Statement from Minister AK Sharma
In Lucknow, State Energy Minister AK Sharma remarked that following the rollout of smart meters and the prepaid system, individuals were facing some technical challenges. He noted, “Consumers encountered issues when transitioning smart meters to prepaid mode.
Now, electricity for domestic consumers, especially those with connections up to 1 kilowatt, will not be disconnected for 30 days under any circumstances, even if their balance is negative.” This government decision is considered a major step towards providing relief to consumers and simplifying the electricity billing system. This will provide significant relief, especially to small domestic consumers.
Do smart meters really run fast?
The biggest complaint about smart meters has been that they record units faster than regular meters. However, the electricity department has denied these claims. Department officials say that smart meters record electricity consumption just like regular meters. They do not record any extra or incorrect readings.
