New Delhi: If you do not have an LPG connection at home, do not worry. If you wish to avoid potential shortages of gas cylinders, you can apply for an LPG connection. The Government of India has now begun strictly enforcing the “one connection per household” rule. Due to tensions in West Asia, gas supplies are being disrupted across numerous countries worldwide.

The root cause of this issue is the practice of holding dual connections. It has now been declared illegal to possess two gas connections simultaneously. The new rule formulated by the government holds significant importance for you, and you must be aware of it. You can find key details regarding LPG and PNG connections explained below.

One Connection Per Household: A Mandatory Requirement

According to the regulations, if your household currently holds both PNG (Piped Natural Gas) and LPG connections, you may soon come under official scrutiny. Recent reports from Delhi indicate that authorities are actively working to identify households that are utilising both types of connections concurrently. The primary objective of this initiative is to curb black marketing and ensure regulatory compliance.

Furthermore, the aim is to ensure that subsidies reach only those individuals who are genuinely in need of them. In this regard, the government has issued a strict directive stating that households already equipped with a piped gas supply facility will no longer be eligible for subsidised domestic LPG cylinders.

On March 14, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas amended the existing rules under the Essential Commodities Act. As per this amended rule, if you already possess a PNG connection, you are required to surrender your LPG connection immediately.

The Rule Applies to Oil Companies as Well

This new regulation applies not only to consumers but also to oil marketing companies. They have been issued directives instructing them not to issue new LPG connections to households that already have access to a PNG supply. Furthermore, they are required to refrain from refilling cylinders for such households.

According to information provided by Joint Secretary Sujata Sharma, the government is currently conducting an assessment to determine the total number of households across India that are utilising both types of gas connections. For your information, more than 43,000 customers across the country have voluntarily surrendered their LPG connections after switching to PNG. According to the government, the actual number of such households could be significantly higher, and it is now utilising data tracking to identify them.
