Indian Railway Rules for Domestic Animals: Millions of people travel by Indian Railways every day, and there are certain essential rules associated with travelling. For long-distance travel, train travel is considered the best and most affordable option. While flights allow you to cover long distances quickly, they can prove to be quite expensive for some people. If you, too, travel by train and own a pet—and are considering taking it along—you should familiarise yourself with certain rules beforehand.

According to the railway administration, strict action will be taken against anyone found transporting a pet on a train without proper booking and the necessary documentation. In such instances, the passenger may be liable to pay a fine amounting to up to six times the standard fare. As per railway regulations, pet dogs may only be transported in AC or First Class coaches.

Essential Conditions:

* The entire coupe or cabin must be reserved.
* The consent of co-passengers travelling in the same compartment is mandatory.
* Permission from the TTE (Travelling Ticket Examiner) must be obtained.

Parcel and Brake Van Facilities

The railways provide a dedicated luggage van facility. In this section, the animal is housed in a designated “dog box” located near the Guard’s cabin and is transported securely.

How to Book?

If you wish to book a reservation for your pet, you must contact the Parcel Office at the railway station. There, you will be required to provide the animal’s weight, fill out the prescribed form, and pay the applicable fees. Once the process is complete, the railways will issue an official receipt.

Required Documents

* Health Certificate issued by a veterinarian
* Vaccination Certificate
* Owner’s Identity Proof

What are the Charges?

The service charge is determined solely by the weight of the pet. Additionally, a 2% Development Charge and a 5% GST are levied separately.
