There’s great news for taxpayers. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has extended the deadline for filing tax audit reports. The new deadline for taxpayers to submit their audit reports is October 31, 2025. Previously, the deadline was September 30, 2025. This decision is intended to provide taxpayers with additional time to prepare and file their reports, ensuring they submit all required documents and details correctly.

The CBDT had previously set a deadline for taxpayers to file their reports, but due to increased workload and administrative reasons, it has been extended. This move will provide significant relief to businesses and professionals who were facing time constraints in preparing their audit reports.

Details of the New Tax Audit Report Deadline

The Income Tax Department shared on the social media platform ‘X’ that the Central Board of Direct Taxes has extended the deadline for filing various audit reports for the financial year 2024-25 (assessment year 2025-26). This extension will apply to taxpayers specified in clause (a) of Explanation 2 to subsection (1) of section 139 of the Income Tax Act. This decision will provide taxpayers with sufficient time to ensure quality and error-free reports.

Continuous Requests for Deadline Extension

The CBDT had received requests from several professional organizations, including chartered accountant associations, to extend the tax audit deadline. These organizations highlighted the difficulties faced by taxpayers and tax practitioners in completing audit reports on time.

The requests stated that floods and natural disasters in some parts of the country had affected normal business and professional activities. This was the reason for the extension. The issue had also been raised in several High Courts. Thirty writ petitions have been filed so far in various High Courts across the country.

The Jodhpur Bench of the Rajasthan High Court directed the government and the CBDT to extend the September 30 deadline to October 31. The Karnataka High Court also directed the CBDT to extend the deadline to October 31. Similarly, the All India Federation of Tax Practitioners (AIFTP) also requested the CBDT to extend the deadline for tax audit reports to October 31.

Smooth Functioning of the E-Filing Portal

The CBDT has also clarified that the Income Tax e-filing portal is functioning smoothly and tax audit reports are being uploaded successfully without any technical issues. As of September 24, approximately 402,000 tax audit reports have been filed. More than 75.7 million ITRs have been filed as of September 23, 2025. This indicates that the decision to extend the deadline has been taken due to administrative reasons and not due to any technical issue in the portal.
