8th Pay Commission Alert: Central government employees and pensioners are currently monitoring news related to the 8th Pay Commission. Taking advantage of this curiosity, cyber fraudsters have become active. Recently, a link to a fake mobile app called “8th Pay Commission Salary Calculator” has been rapidly circulating. People are being told through messages and WhatsApp that this app can help them calculate their potential new salary. However, it is actually a fraudulent tactic. After receiving numerous complaints, agencies have issued a warning regarding this.

Government Warning

The government has clarified that no such official app has been released. Cyber Dost, the Home Ministry’s cybersecurity initiative, has warned people that this app is not available on the Google Play Store. Fraudsters send it as an APK file and ask them to install it directly. Ordinary users often fail to understand the significant threat that an externally downloaded APK file poses to their phone’s security. The government has clarified that it never shares APK files through WhatsApp or any other messaging platform.

Learn what experts say

According to cyber experts, as soon as this fake app is installed on a phone, it silently activates in the background. Through this, fraudsters can access mobile messages, banking information, and even one-time passwords (OTPs). In many cases, victims remain unaware until money disappears from their bank accounts. Therefore, trusting any unknown link or file can be costly.

What should employees do?

If someone accidentally downloads such a suspicious app, delete it immediately. If necessary, factory resetting the mobile phone can be a safe option. Never share bank details or OTPs. Only obtain information related to the 8th Pay Commission from the official government website. In case of cyber fraud, immediately contact the National Cyber Crime Helpline 1930 or file a complaint online. A little vigilance can save you from major losses.
