Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana: Currently, a shortage of LPG cylinders is being witnessed across the country, leading to a deteriorating situation. Due to high demand and sales at distribution agencies, many people are returning empty-handed. On one hand, the administration is cracking down on the black marketing of cylinders at inflated prices; on the other, it is extending benefits to a large number of people under the PM Ujjwala Yojana.
The primary objective of this scheme is to provide smoke-free cooking gas to poor families, particularly women. In rural India, cooking over traditional stoves for extended periods used to have severe adverse effects on health. This not only caused environmental damage but also seriously impacted the health of women and children due to the accumulation of smoke inside their homes.

How Much Cheaper Are the Cylinders?
Due to the conflict involving Iran, a climate of apprehension regarding LPG supply persists in India. The government has repeatedly asserted that the situation remains normal. However, the price of LPG cylinders has indeed been increased. Despite this, beneficiaries of the Ujjwala Yojana are being provided with cylinders at a reduced cost—specifically, at a discount of ₹300.
Beneficiaries of the PM Ujjwala Yojana receive a direct subsidy of ₹300. This means that, compared to the standard market rate, Ujjwala Yojana beneficiaries can procure an LPG cylinder for ₹300 less. Under this scheme, LPG connections are provided to beneficiaries without any security deposit or installation charges.
How Many Cylinders Are Provided Annually?
The Government of India launched this scheme on May 1, 2016, in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh. The objective of the PM Ujjwala Yojana is to provide clean cooking fuel, such as LPG, to rural and underprivileged families. Under this scheme, families living below the poverty line (BPL) are provided with a free gas connection and 12 subsidised cylinders per year.
To date, more than 100 million people have benefited from this scheme. This government initiative has provided significant relief to people residing in rural areas and those belonging to economically weaker sections of society.

Since the inception of the PM Ujjwala Yojana, the lives of women have become significantly easier. Previously, gathering firewood and cooking on a traditional earthen stove used to consume a significant amount of their time; however, that is no longer the case.
With the aid of gas cylinders, meals can now be prepared in a very short time. In addition to saving time, this has also provided relief from illnesses caused by smoke. There has been a substantial decline in smoke-related ailments, such as eye irritation, respiratory issues, and lung diseases.
