Flight Ticket Cancellation Rules Changed, Get Money within Few Hours

Flight Ticket Refund Guidelines: For air travelers, booking tickets is a straightforward process, but changes in plans post-booking can lead to complications. Cancellation fees can sometimes be unexpected, and obtaining refunds can be quite challenging. To tackle these concerns, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has introduced important updates to ticketing regulations.

One of the most discussed features of the new regulations is the 48-hour “look-in option.” Let’s delve into what this entails and how it impacts travelers.

What does the 48-hour look-in option mean?

Under the new regulations, passengers now have a 48-hour “look-in” option following their ticket purchase. This allows you to cancel or modify your booking within 48 hours without facing any extra cancellation fees.

Keep these conditions in mind:

This feature is not universally applicable to all tickets. The DGCA has also specified that this option will lapse 48 hours after the original booking, after which standard cancellation or modification fees will be enforced.

For domestic flights: Your flight must be scheduled at least 7 days after the booking date.
For international flights: The flight date should be a minimum of 15 days away.
Booking Source: This option is available only if the ticket was purchased directly from the airline’s website.
Fare: If you decide to change your ticket, there won’t be a cancellation fee, but you will need to pay the current fare for the new ticket.

When will this rule come into effect?

This new rule is part of a DGCA regulation dated February 24th and will come into effect on March 26th. The DGCA stated that complaints related to ticket refunds had become a major concern for passengers. They specifically focused on issues such as delayed refunds, not receiving full refunds, and being issued vouchers instead of money. This prompted the regulator to intervene. The DGCA acknowledged that it does not normally interfere directly in airlines’ business decisions, but the increasing number of complaints necessitated taking action in the interest of passengers.

What changes have been made to the rest of the refund rules?

The DGCA not only granted a 48-hour grace period but also set a deadline for refunds. Tickets paid for with credit cards must be refunded within seven working days. Even if the ticket was purchased through a travel agent or online portal, the airline will still be responsible for completing the refund within 14 working days. Cash-paid tickets must be returned immediately to the airline office where the ticket was purchased. This means airlines will no longer be able to delay refunds.
