EPFO Pension: Pension becomes a major support for every employee after retirement. EPFO pensions typically begin at age 58. However, few people know that it can be taken as early as age 50. However, certain conditions and deductions apply. Let’s understand the entire system in simple terms.

Regular pension begins at 58

Pension under the Employees’ Provident Fund Organization begins at age 58. This amount is determined based on the employee’s PF and EPS contributions. If a member wishes, they can defer their pension until age 60. Doing so results in a 4 percent increase each year. This means that starting your pension later results in a higher amount, which can be beneficial in the long run.

Pension can be received even at 50, but with a deduction

EPFO also gives its members the option to receive pension after the age of 50. However, in this case, a 4 percent deduction is made every year. For example, if someone was supposed to receive a pension of Rs 7,000 at 58, it will reduce to Rs 6,720 at 57. This means that the earlier you start your pension, the less you will receive. Therefore, this decision should be made carefully.

Family and dependents also benefit

Upon the death of a member, the spouse and two children under the age of 25 receive a pension. The 10-year contribution requirement does not apply. If the member is unmarried and has no children, the pension is paid to their dependent parents. In the absence of the father, the mother receives a lifetime pension. This requires filing Form 10D.

Furthermore, there is a provision for pension in case of disability due to accident or illness. The age or 10 years of service requirement is not applicable. Children who have lost both parents are also provided financial assistance until the age of 25. This scheme ensures financial security not only for the employee but also for his or her family.
