Passport New Update: A passport is considered the most important document for traveling abroad, studying at a foreign university, or settling in another country. A passport is issued by the Government of India and serves as proof of a person’s identity and citizenship. A visa, on the other hand, is permission from the government of another country, allowing entry, residence, or work in that country.

Why is Updating Your Address Necessary After Moving?

If you have moved to a new city or a new house within the same city, updating your address on your passport becomes crucial. Many people overlook this, but later they may face problems during visa applications, police verification, or international travel. Discrepancies between the address on your passport and your current address can raise questions during document verification at the embassy or consulate.

Both Online and Offline Options Available

The facility to change your address on your passport is available through both online and offline methods. The application process can be completed online, but the applicant is required to visit a Passport Seva Kendra or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra for document verification.

Complete Online Application Process

To update your address, first, you need to register as a new user on the passportindia.gov.in website. After logging in, select the “Reissue of Passport” option and then select “Change in Existing Personal Particulars.” Then, fill in the new address as mentioned in your address proof. A scanned copy of your Aadhaar card, electricity bill, or other valid address proof needs to be uploaded along with the application.

Fees and Appointment Information

After filling out the form, the fee needs to be paid online. The fee is ₹1,500 for a 36-page passport and ₹2,000 for a 60-page passport. After payment, an appointment is booked at a Passport Seva Kendra or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra. On the day of the appointment, it is mandatory to carry the application receipt, old passport, self-attested copies of the new address proof, and two passport-size photographs.

Which documents are valid for address proof?

For updating the address in your passport, you can use your Aadhaar card, Voter ID, electricity, water, or telephone bill, rent agreement, bank statement, gas connection bill, or your spouse’s passport. It is important to note that the bills should not be more than three months old.

Police Verification Process

Police verification is mandatory for any passport-related service. The passport office sends the application details to the local police station. A police officer then visits the applicant’s address to verify the documents. After the verification is complete, the passport is usually dispatched to the applicant’s address within three to seven days.
