Under the Bengal government’s “Annapurna Bhandaar” scheme, financial assistance of Rs 3,000 will begin being credited to women’s bank accounts from June 1, a state government official said on Monday (May 11). During the assembly election campaign, Prime Minister Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah repeatedly promised to implement the Annapurna Bhandaar social welfare scheme for women in the state.

Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari began fulfilling these promises on Monday, the first working day of the new government. The first cabinet meeting was held on Monday at the state secretariat, Nabanna. Following the meeting, the state government announced the launch date of the “Annapurna Bhandaar” scheme. Ayushman Bharat will be launched in the state from June 1

From June 1 West BengalAyushman Bharat will be officially implemented in 2019, bringing the state under the ambit of this flagship healthcare program of the Centre. Ayushman Bharat is one of the biggest public health initiatives of the Narendra Modi government and provides health insurance coverage to eligible families. The initiative is expected to increase access to healthcare benefits for people across the state.

The government has also clarified that the existing welfare schemes currently running in West Bengal will continue even after the implementation of Ayushman Bharat.

Free bus travel for women

Along with the healthcare scheme, women in West Bengal will also be able to travel free on government buses starting June 1. This move is expected to benefit a large number of daily commuters, including working women and students who rely on public transport. In the coming months, these two welfare measures are likely to have a ripple effect on both access to healthcare and public transport use across the state.

The new government has also put an end to the public’s questions about whether old schemes will be discontinued. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has clearly stated that no old public welfare schemes will be discontinued, but rather, they will be improved and made even better. Further major announcements are expected at next Monday’s cabinet meeting, which could further ease the lives of the common man.
