The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has published the list of bank holidays for May 2026. This month, banks will be closed for a total of 12 days, which includes weekly holidays and several significant festivals. While these holidays might differ slightly from one state to another, banks will generally be closed on most days nationwide.
When and where will banks be closed in May 2026?
1. May 1 (Friday) – Buddha Purnima / May Day
Banks will be closed in many states, including Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal.
2. May 3 (Sunday) – A weekly holiday will be observed across the country.
3. May 9 (Saturday) – Second Saturday and Rabindranath Tagore’s birth anniversary
Banks will be closed nationwide due to the second Saturday. Additionally, there will be a holiday in West Bengal for Tagore Jayanti.
4. May 10 (Sunday) – Banks will be closed throughout the country.
5. May 16 (Saturday) – Some states will observe a closure due to State Day.
6. May 17 (Sunday) – Weekly holiday across the nation.
7. May 23 (Saturday) – Fourth Saturday – Banks will be closed nationwide.
8. May 24 (Sunday) – Banks will be closed across the country.
9. May 26 (Tuesday) – Some states will close banks in observance of Kazi Nazrul Islam’s birthday.
10. May 27 (Wednesday) – Bakrid (Eid al-Adha)
Most of the country will see bank closures, as many states have declared a holiday. Note that holidays can vary by state.
11. May 28 (Thursday) – Some states will close banks for Bakrid (Eid-ul-Zuha).
12. May 31 (Sunday) – Weekly holiday across the nation.
There will be one long weekend in May.
The month starts with a sort of long weekend. May 1st is a holiday, followed by Saturday, May 2nd, and Sunday, May 3rd. While banks will be open on May 2nd, the consecutive holidays may encourage many to treat it as a long weekend.
Online banking services will remain available during the bank closures.
This means check clearance, cash deposits, and passbook updates will be impossible. However, digital services like UPI, mobile banking, internet banking, and ATMs will remain operational as usual.
