A new report from the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has unveiled a plan to start an air taxi service in Delhi-NCR. This plan will connect Delhi, Gurugram, and Jewar Airport by air. This means that the journey from Gurugram to Connaught Place, which currently takes about an hour and a half, will now be done in just 7 to 10 minutes.
What will the air taxi experience be like?
According to the plan, these air taxis will be small electric flying vehicles that will take off and land directly at the specified locations, much like helicopters. The CII report mentions that this will start as a trial run, and if everything goes smoothly, it could eventually be made available to the public. The advantages of this will include easing traffic, saving time, and reducing pollution thanks to electric technology.
The journey to air taxis isn’t straightforward
Getting air taxis off the ground in Delhi-NCR is quite a challenge. The airspace above Delhi is already packed with planes. So, for air taxis to take off, there will need to be new rules, tight security protocols, and specific landing areas. Without the green light from the government and aviation authorities, this vision won’t materialize. Reports indicate that trials might kick off between 2026 and 2028, and if all goes well, traveling from Delhi to Gurugram in the future could feel like taking the metro today, except the metro is on the ground while these taxis will be soaring through the skies.
