8th Pay Commission: The anticipation for the dearness allowance (DA) increase for January 2026 is ongoing, with millions of central government employees eagerly waiting for the announcement. The government usually reveals DA hikes around significant festivals like Holi or Diwali, so there was hope for positive news in early March, prior to Holi. Unfortunately, that did not occur this time, and even though we are already halfway through March, no official announcement has been made yet.
DA increases twice a year
In reality, the government raises DA two times a year (once effective in January and the second time in July). However, these announcements often come a few weeks apart. DA is determined based on the 12-month average of the All India Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers (AICPI-IW), which helps provide workers with a buffer against inflation.
Observing the pattern from previous years, the government has typically announced DA increases in late March or early April. For instance, the DA increase for 2025 was revealed on March 28, while in 2024, it was announced on March 12. The July 2025 DA was disclosed on October 1, 2025, ahead of Diwali. Although the date is not set in stone, announcements around festival times have become a regular occurrence.
Considering this trend, it is anticipated that the DA hike for January 2026 could be announced soon—potentially in late March or early April. Regardless of when the announcement occurs, the increased DA will be effective from January 1, 2026, and employees will receive back pay. Based on AICPI data, a DA increase of about 2% is expected this time. If this materializes, the current 58% DA will rise to 60%. However, the final decision will only be confirmed after government approval.
An increase in DA directly impacts employees’ salaries, as it represents a percentage of their basic salary. For example, if an employee’s basic salary is Rs 30,000, a 2% DA increase would result in approximately Rs 600 more per month. Similarly, employees at different pay levels will also receive an increase in their salaries, increasing their overall income.
