Tesla in India soon: Grand entry with Model Y, price ₹ 60-70 lakh

Tesla Model Y: US electric vehicle maker Tesla is set to enter India by the end of this year. Elon Musk’s company is going to adopt a “top-down approach”. The company will first launch expensive models in the country and then launch cheaper vehicles.

The electric car maker is reportedly set to import the fully assembled Model ‘Y’ from its Berlin Gigafactory to India. This electric SUV is made in Europe in right-hand drive configuration. Given the recently announced revised import duty structure by the government, the Tesla Model Y will be priced at ₹ 60-70 lakh.

Customs duty reduced so much in India

The country has reduced the basic customs duty on high-end cars priced above $40,000 (approximately ₹ 34,780) from 110 percent to 70 percent. The right-hand-drive Model 3 is also made in Shanghai, but it is unlikely to arrive in the first phase due to restrictions on Chinese car imports. According to industry experts, there are no plans for local assembly of Tesla vehicles at the moment. However, these plans may change shortly.

Will offer many jobs in 13 locations

Tesla, which has an office in Pune, is reportedly scouting locations in Mumbai’s Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) and Delhi’s Atrocity to set up its first showroom in the country. The company has advertised for at least 13 new roles, most of which are for the Mumbai and Delhi markets.

According to LinkedIn ads, these jobs include Business Operations Analyst, Service Technician, and various consultant roles including Customer Engagement Manager and Order Operations Specialist.

Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Tesla owner Elon Musk in the US and discussed various issues including space, mobility, technology, and innovation. The world’s richest man has also toyed with the idea of developing a more affordable version of the Tesla for the Indian market, but there hasn’t been any significant progress on it yet.
