Whenever the Indian automobile market mentions powerful off-roading and formidable road presence, the Mahindra Thar is the first name that comes to mind. For over a decade, it has remained the country’s most iconic and beloved SUV.
Now, exciting news is coming for all off-road enthusiasts. Mahindra is preparing to launch an all-new, more capable and attractive version of the Thar. We bring you every detail you need to know about this impressive new Thar.
Vision T Concept

On Independence Day 2025, Mahindra unveiled its innovative new platform, the NU_IQ. Along with this, the company also unveiled four new concept models—Vision S, SXT, T, and X. Of all these, the Vision T concept SUV attracted the most attention.
Its muscular, boxy, and rugged design is directly reminiscent of the Thar. The Thar’s iconic slatted grille, tall, wide tires, a front tow hitch, and a rear boot-mounted spare wheel clearly indicate that this is a modernized version of the future Thar. Previously, the company showcased the Thar.e concept in 2023, but this new version appears to be a more mature and production-ready version.
Interior and Features
Not only will the exterior of this upcoming SUV win your heart, but its cabin will also be a powerful addition. The company has given its interior a rugged and premium look.
Its upright dashboard is decorated in three different colors, including a dull green theme, and the metal plates on the doors further reinforce its off-road character. A large portrait touchscreen infotainment system sits in the center of the dashboard, offering a premium feel. The driver also gets a fully digital instrument cluster.
This new SUV will feature modern features like dual-zone automatic climate control, summer-ventilated front seats, a powered driver’s seat, and a wireless charging pad. To take safety to the next level, it’s expected to feature a panoramic sunroof and a full suite of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).
Engine, Power, and Off-Road Capability

Mahindra’s new NU_IQ platform is so advanced that it can accommodate all types of engines—petrol, diesel, hybrid, and pure electric (EV). This means customers will have complete freedom to choose the powertrain they desire.
Like the current model, it is expected to retain the company’s reliable 1.5-liter diesel, 2.0-liter Mustang Turbo Petrol, and 2.2-liter mHawk diesel engine options. Furthermore, Mahindra may also introduce a new hybrid powertrain based on the 1.2-liter turbo petrol engine. For those seeking an electric version, it could offer two different battery pack sizes, offering a great driving range.
The best part for off-road enthusiasts is that the 2.0-liter petrol and 2.2-liter diesel variants offer a proper 4X4 (four-by-four) system. The hybrid variant will feature e-4WD (Electronic Four-Wheel Drive), and the electric variant will also offer 4X4 capabilities, allowing the car to easily conquer any challenging terrain.
Launch Timeline and Expected Price
Based on Mahindra’s new platform and the Vision T concept, the new Thar is expected to be launched in the Indian market by 2028. Pricing, given its impressive features and wide range of engine options, is expected to start at around ₹13.50 lakh (on-road) in Mumbai.
