E-rickshaw registration: E-rickshaw registration in Delhi will recommence on May 15th. New regulations will be put in place to enforce stricter measures against unlicensed e-rickshaws. Each license holder will be permitted to register only one e-rickshaw. Additionally, a compulsory 10-day training program will be required.
Under the updated system by the Delhi government, a license holder can register only one e-rickshaw. Officials state that this initiative aims to prevent the practice of registering multiple vehicles under a single individual’s name and subsequently leasing them out to others.
Registrations were halted in November
The Delhi Transport Department paused registrations in November of the previous year. Officials mentioned that the online portal for issuing training certificates and registering e-rickshaw drivers will be available again starting May 15. Transport Minister Pankaj Singh indicated that these modifications are part of the efforts to regulate e-rickshaw operations in Delhi and tackle issues related to unauthorized vehicles and traffic congestion.
10 days of mandatory training
The minister noted that allowing only one e-rickshaw registration per individual will enhance ownership and minimize violations. E-rickshaws operating without authorization in the city will now be under surveillance. Applicants wishing to register will need to complete a mandatory 10-day training program, which will take place at designated centers. However, this restriction of one vehicle per license holder will not be applicable to registered transport companies or e-cart operators functioning within institutional premises. Such entities will still be allowed to register multiple vehicles under the same name, as they have in the past.
Registration will be subject to review
Officials also mentioned that the department is developing a system to identify individuals who currently have multiple e-rickshaws registered under their names. These registrations may be reviewed or potentially revoked during annual fitness inspections.
Officials also plan to intensify action against illegal e-rickshaws operating without valid registration. The Transport Department has prepared a draft e-rickshaw policy for the Delhi government’s approval. Officials said the policy aims to regulate the number of e-rickshaws in the city and ensure a more balanced distribution of them across different areas.
Officials also said the draft policy suggests measures to regulate the routes and deployment of e-rickshaws based on demand and traffic conditions in different parts of Delhi. A senior transport department official said, “E-rickshaws are present across the city, but there is no specific control on their numbers. We may also consider assigning routes and adjusting their numbers based on demand.”
