UIDAI: The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has made a significant announcement for Aadhaar cardholders. Updating crucial details such as name, address, date of birth (DOB), or gender in Aadhaar is now simpler than ever. UIDAI has broadened its list of acceptable documents, adding over 30 new options. The primary aim of this update is to assist those who previously lacked the necessary documents from the limited list and had to navigate through various offices to correct their information.

What changes have been approved?

Individuals often need to modify their Aadhaar card address due to name misspellings, surname changes after marriage, or relocating. With the new regulations, UIDAI has introduced several additional options in the categories of ‘Proof of Identity’, ‘Proof of Address’, and ‘Relationship Documents’. Now, you can utilize various other government and semi-government documents alongside ration cards, voter IDs, and passports. This initiative will particularly benefit people in rural areas and young individuals who may not yet possess many formal documents.

List of new documents

The updated list released by UIDAI features several documents that are typically easily accessible to the public. For instance, photo identity cards issued by the central or state government, service photo ID cards from public sector undertakings (PSUs), and disability certificates (UDID Cards) are now recognized as valid. Additionally, school leaving certificates (SLC), school transfer certificates (TC), and PAN cards can be utilized to amend names and dates of birth. For proof of address, rent agreements or bank statements from the last three months, along with electricity bills, water bills, and telephone bills, can now be used more effectively.

Online and offline update options

UIDAI has not only expanded the list of documents but also streamlined the process for updating them. Citizens can scan and upload these new documents online through the ‘myAadhaar’ portal and change their address from the comfort of their homes. However, changes to name or date of birth may still require biometric authentication, which will require a visit to your nearest Aadhaar enrollment center. The good news is that the chances of rejection due to the long list of documents will now be significantly reduced.

Along with increasing the number of documents, UIDAI has also tightened security standards. All submitted documents are thoroughly verified. The authority has warned that submitting any fraudulent documents may result in legal action. Therefore, always ensure that any document you submit is in your name and the information provided is clear. UIDAI’s goal is to ensure that every citizen’s Aadhaar data is absolutely accurate, so that they can continue to benefit from government schemes and banking services without interruption.
